Soul, hip-hop and rap are key flavors in his rich fusion of Afro-Bahian percussion with the sophisticated melodies and harmonies that typify the best of Brazilian music.In this portrait Carlinhos gives us a tour of the Bahian tytowns of Candeal where he grew up and still resides, revealing the vibrant culture which most tourists never see. Carlinhos introduces us to the legendary Pintado do Bongo, a retired driver who initiated Carlinhos into the world of percussion and watched him master all the instruments from tambourine through bongos.Carlinhos' spectacular live show is captured at a major concert in Salvador, Bahia. Interspersed throughout the film, he is also seen in many intimate moments singing and playing guitar or percussion with the people of Candeal. This portrait is rich with Carlinhos' wit and revealing observations about his own life: I was born to play drums. I cultivate rhythms. My head is like a museum.
