Estudando O Pagode Full Description
This deliciously strange set by the Brazilian pop experimentalist Tom Ze, who has worked with kindred spirits like David Byrne and Tortoise, features donkeys in heat, homemade kazoos and loads of giddy, cuckoo-clock samba rhythms. Mixing seriousness and absurdity is old hat for Ze, 69, a founding member of Brazil's high-minded Tropicalia art movement. However, this oddly rocking operetta about sexual politics -- one song involves a gay-pride march at the Vatican -- may be his most ambitious gesture yet. Sung in Portuguese with an English libretto, it's not the optimal Ze introduction (see the Byrne-curated Best of Tom Ze for that). But its dizzying counterpoints, seductive crooning and orgasmic yelps will definitely heat up your next cocktail party.
