This CD offers excellent value for money and is an ideal introduction to Grachan Moncur III's music and includes new, updated sleeve notes from Edwin Pouncey of The Wire magazine.The influence of John Coltrane on his music is apparent on both of the featured albums. Supporting Grachan on the New Africa dates were Roscoe Mitchell (alto sax), Dave Burrell (piano), Alan Silva (bass), with Andrew Cyrille on drums.Aco Dei De Madrugada (translated as One Morning I Waked Up Very Early) comprises two of Moncur's own compositions, the other two being based on traditional Brazilian tunes. Grachan is joined on these by pianist Fernando Martins and bassist Beb Guerin.
