For many armchair travelers, Brazil is not a country: It is a single slender beach in Rio de Janeiro -- the famous Ipanema -- and life there is not much more than string bikinis and sensual music. Hence Caipirinha, the most egregious of these three albums, culled from Universal's bounteous Latin catalog. Conceived as a party platter, Caipirinha throws together Gilberto Gil's elegantly abra-sive "Aquele Abraco" and Jorge Ben's sultry "Mas Que Nada" with modern, American-R&B-influenced jams.

Samba Soul Groove aims higher, tracing the arc of Rio's graceful, diverse samba scene. Some songs are absurd -- Os Mutantes' goofy, delicate "She's My Shoo Shoo" -- and some are profoundly soulful, such as Tim Maia's "Reu Confesso." Regardless of tone, though, the songs display a common flexibility: blistering horns competing for attention with undulating guitars and clipped, off-beat percussion.

The Girls From Ipanema posits bossa nova as a feminine genre -- the liner notes call it a "well-traveled lady." Missing, then, is the music's pioneer, Joao Gilberto, although his ex-wife, singer Astrud, and his daughter Bebel bookend this breezy set. Fine performances by Gal Costa and Wanda Sa support the maternal theory. But Ipanema really celebrates the triumph of demographics over history.
